The EG-101 has a certain retro-styling which many people love but actually
represents quite new technology. It is the first keyboard in the Groove
range (following the MC-303 and MC-505 GrooveBox machines). Less a synth
and more a dance creation system, the EG-101 gives you a wealth of backing
styles to choose from, complete with variations, fills, intros and
endings. These play a whole backing, including drums, percussion, bass and
other accompaniments. The tuning of the chords is played from the
keyboards like old-fashioned home organs. The sound, however, is a
different kettle of fish from those dinosaurs altogether. The styles cover
the gamut of recent trends, from drum and bass, hip-hop and big beat
(complete with Prodigy and Chemical Brothers parodies) to straight techno,
reggae and even pop (which includes versions of Garbage and Chumbawumba -
we kid you not).
